Rob Sketcherman is your iPad Sketch tutor for an 11 day Retreat in Da lat Vietnam, November 25th - December 5th 2019. Your host Anna Barnes of ArtFoodCulture (long term traveller to Vietnam, chef and artist) has built a network of contacts over the years who delight in giving our groups special attention. They take us off the tourist trail to experience locations that only a local can.

You will be staying in both a Da Lat city hotel, easy walking distance to the Da Lat famous night markets and a Lak Lake countryside glamping style bungalow. Each morning Rob will give an iPad Sketch Class, especially tailored to capture the stunning region of Da Lat, its people and culture. Rob will build lessons around the historic architecture, street scenes, the market, the lake and the crowds of people there. He has developed a workshop program especially for this Retreat for all levels, from absolute beginners to those familiar with iPad sketching. Rob starts with an indoor session so everyone’s familiar with the interface and tools of Procreate then we head out for a leisurely location sketch in one of Da Lat’s fascinating locations.

We have chosen sketching locations that will encompass and showcase Da lat. K’ho Lat Minority village, Domain de Marie church, Linh Phuoc Pagoda, Dalat Teacher college and the Old railway station. One of the many highlights will be visiting Dak lak Province where we will stay in a tented camp for some serious glamping that honours cultural preservation and environmental protection. We vist Yangtao village, located on the foot of Chu Yang Sin National Park, and trek to the hidden waterfall, enjoy the jungle canopy, and swim at the fresh natural pool whilst savouring a healthy picnic lunch.

Rob will guide you with your iPad sketching and is looking forward to teaching in such a fascinating environment. Meals are included, and Anna will be taking you to her favourite places from the busiest of streetfood vendors where only the locals go, to markets, to the loveliest of Vietnamese restaurants. You will experience many different styles of Vietnamese cuisine. Plenty of time will also be spent enjoying the hills, pine forests, lakes and waterfalls. Da lat is known as the “City of Eternal Spring” for its distinctive temperate climate, it was developed as a resort by the French in the early 1900s, and many reminders of its colonial heritage remain.

The retreat will have a strong emphasis on taking care of our tourist footprint. Stainless Steel water bottles, bamboo straws and re usable ethically made cotton bags will be used, to reduce the use of single use plastic. Anna will also point out other ways we can take responsibility for our impact on the environment and the beautiful gentle people of Da Lat throughout the tour.

About Rob Sketcherman:

...and nice guy + gadget geek, some might add. Well, those are some of the better things Rob has been called. Making art on location on his iPad Pro, also known as urban sketching, is what he is most known for, and is what he loves doing whenever possible. There's nothing like the alchemy of being in one spot, absorbing the details of what's happening around him, then capturing the essence of what he sees and feels on his (digital) canvas.

Anna has asked Rob to be the principle sketch tutor for this trip because of his incredible skills using the iPad. With the release of the new iPad in 2018, and the increasing popularity of iPad Urban Sketching, Anna believes that there can not be a better person more suited to be a tutor on one of her Retreats. His abilities in both sketching and teaching, along with his long term experience as an iPad workshop facilitator mean that guests on this Retreat will experience great satisfaction. He is a lover of good food too, and will show us how to iPad sketch it! Anna looks forward to him sharing his passion with her Retreat Guests.
