Art Food Culture with Erin Hill Sketching leads Sketch&Lunch workshops. They are held on the last Monday of the month, in a Sydney suburb that showcases the cuisine that is in focus.
Our Japanese Sketch&Lunch day will be held Monday May 28th. We will meet at The Sydney Fish Market, Pyrmont. Beginning at 10:30 am and finishing at 1:30pm.
1: We visit a restaurant/cafe for a beverage or light snack and first taste of Japanese food (the freshest sashimi around). This is where we will do our first sketch. We focus on sketching skills where you will sketch the main shapes of our food items and apply simple colour to capture the essence. We look at details such as text and font, colours that pop and planning our pages.
2: We discuss the cuisine and culture of the Country we are focussing on followed by a foot tour through the local area or markets explaining the unique ingredients and cooking implements of the cuisine.
A sketch capturing the impression of the area is a must. Simple perspective, line of movement and simplifying a scene are focussed on.
3: We move on for a light lunch in a restaurant that is either favoured by the locals, a little unusual, or showcases a particular region or style of the cuisine particularly well.
We will sketch again and look at how to capture the essence of the restaurant, and incorporate the themes of the cuisine and culture into your sketch.
* Sketching tuition and tour guiding on the day included.
* Wear comfortable walking shoes – it is a walking tour.
* Bring cash to make bill splitting a breeze (we wont be stopping at any ATM’s).
* Small group size (5 pp max).
*Cost for the day is $65 (Not included – Your personal travel to meeting location, drinks, fresh food purchases and lunch )
*We have a “mini kit” available, that includes an A5 journal, black sketching pen and set of aquarelle pencils, which will get you sketching for the day.
*This is no ordinary lunch date. We will be immersing ourselves in culture, streetfoods and authentic markets. I will encourage you to sketch whilst sitting, standing, shopping or eating. Lets go and have some fun!
Anna Barnes, your host and tutor for the day has a degree in Fine Arts and Social Anthropology, and has her Masters in Design Science. She was an award winning chef in Sydney’s restaurants for 25 years.
She is also a very passionate sketcher and trained Erin Hill Tutor. She cannot wait to share lunch with you.
