ArtFoodCulture Cabramatta Workshop
Anna’s Art Food Culture Sydney Workshops held in Cabramatta.
10:30am to 2:30pm. $85p/person
1: We visit a cafe for a Vietnamese coffee (Ca Phe Sua Da). We will taste a few Vietnamese foods and learn about Vietnamese herbs.
2: We discuss the cuisine and culture of Vietnam followed by a foot tour through the local markets. This is when you will have time to purchase unique ingredients and cooking implements of Vietnamese cuisine. Bring your recipes and shopping lists, and Anna will help you buy the best quality ingredients. We will stop at the Vietnamese supermarket, the fish market, fruit shop and the butcher. Cabramatta has one of the most exciting a vibrant markets in Sydney.
3: A Vietnamese lunch in a comfortable and established restaurant that showcases the cuisine particularly well is enjoyed next. Enjoy a crispy Vietnamese pancake (Banh Xeo) with pork and prawns that is accompanied by a forest of fresh herbs, famous Vietnamese fresh rice paper rolls or try claypot caramelised fish with steamed rice and Vietnamese pickles. Over lunch Anna will demonstrate how to capture the essence of the cuisine in her food journal. She will focus on skills where you will draw or sketch the main shapes of our food items and apply colour. We look at details such as applying text and colours that pop, as well as planning our pages. If you are not a sketcher (and not wanting to give it a try) then this is your chance to take photographs, share travel stories, participate in cultural discussions, or journal and fully immerse yourself in the restaurant experience.
4: Our last stop for the day will be to see how the sugar cane is pressed for juice, and you will enjoy a take away for your journey home. In Vietnam this is a summer time drink enjoyed by so many people, especially in social groups sitting along side the beach or river front in the evenings.
Creative tuition and tour guiding on the day included.
Wear comfortable walking shoes – it is a walking tour.
Bring cash to make your market shopping a breeze (we wont be stopping at any ATM’s and most vendors only take cash).
Bring an esky bag with ice brick for your fresh food purchases (we shop before we lunch, so you want to keep your food fresh).
Bring your sketch kit if you will be food journalling (or camera or travel journal).
Bring your recipes and shopping lists (Anna has been a chef for many years and can answer all your questions and help with purchasing decisions).
Small group size (10 pp max).
Cost for the day is $85.
Included- A Vietnamese coffee, shared lunch with the group, sugar cane juice, small tastes along the way, guided foot tour, and food journalling tuition.
Not included – Your personal travel expenses to our meeting location , alcohol/drinks not mentioned, personal market/fresh food purchases, tips, anything not mentioned in the itinerary)
This is no ordinary lunch date. We will be immersing ourselves in culture, streetfoods and authentic markets. I will encourage you to be creative whilst sitting, standing, shopping or eating.
You may want to sketch, draw, paint or photograph your day. Lets go and have some fun.

Anna Barnes has a degree in Fine Arts and Social Anthropology (Syd Uni), and a Masters in Design Science (Syd Uni). She was an award winning chef and worked in Sydney’s restaurants for 25 years.
She is long time traveller to Vietnam, and passionate sketcher of streetfood scenes. She hosts Creative Tours in Vietnam, is learning to speak Vietnamese, and is passionate about the Culture and Food of Vietnam.
